Selling cash-secured puts on NFLX

$71.71NetFlix Inc · chain snapshot captured

A single-print name: the stock spends the quarter grinding and then gaps on subscriber and margin numbers. Front-month IV going into earnings is the highest in large-cap media, and the post-print crush is brutal by design.

A cash-secured put is a limit order you get paid to place. Sell the Aug 28 $69 put on NFLX and you collect $145 today for the obligation to buy 100 shares at $69. Set aside $6,900 to honour it and the premium is 2.1% over 27 days — 28% annualized.

Every leg above is priced at the chain’s own quote — the identical number the builder will show you when you click through (last traded price), captured August 1, 2026 with a 15-minute delay. Only strikes whose print survives an implied-volatility check (within 20% of its own IV) and a no-arbitrage check across the ladder are priced here. Full methodology. Greeks, breakevens, max profit/loss and probability of profit are computed by OptionTracker’s engine at r = 4.2%. Educational analysis, not investment advice.

How a cash-secured put works

Selling a put transfers the downside between $69 and zero to you, and you are paid $1.45 per share for taking it. "Cash-secured" simply means you hold the $6,900 required to buy the shares instead of leaning on margin. Same position, honest denominator.

At August 28, 2026: above $69 the put expires worthless and you keep $145 — that is the maximum this trade can make, $145. Below it you're assigned 100 shares at $69, with an effective cost basis of $67.55 once the credit is applied. That is 5.8% below where NFLX trades today.

The engine puts the probability of keeping the full credit at 73% on NFLX at $71.71 with 36% ATM implied vol on the Aug 28 expiry. High win rate, capped payoff, uncapped-to-zero loss — the risk profile of every short-premium trade. It is not free money; it is a rent cheque for underwriting someone else's insurance.

When it makes sense

  • You genuinely want to own NFLX at $69 — because roughly 73% of the time you won't get the shares, and the rest of the time you will, at the worst possible moment.
  • IV is elevated relative to realized. At 36% ATM, NFLX is the 10th richest of the 20 underlyings on this site.
  • You have the $6,900 genuinely available. A put "secured" by margin you also intend to use for something else is a naked put with a nicer name.
  • The position survives the worst single session in this underlying's recent history at the size you are about to put on.

Where the risk actually is

The real-world failure mode is a gap, and NFLX has the catalysts for one: quarterly earnings — the only date that reliably matters. A put sold 3.8% out of the money offers no protection at all against a move twice that size overnight.

Assignment is not the loss — being assigned at $69 when NFLX is at $55.2 is. If you are running the wheel, that is the moment the plan is tested: you own shares at a basis of $67.55 and the market disagrees.

Early assignment is an operational risk rather than a market one: it arrives on a weekend, converts a defined structure into a stock position, and requires cash you may have allocated elsewhere.

What is different about doing this on NFLX

Netflix pays premium sellers well for eleven weeks and takes it back in one evening. The structural trade is to sell the post-print month, when IV has been crushed but the stock has already made its move and has no catalyst until the next release — that is where the implied-to-realized gap on this name is actually positive, and it is the opposite of when the credits look most attractive.

NFLX's Aug 28 strikes are $1 apart near the money (1.39% of spot). On a ladder that wide, "pick the 0.30 delta strike" resolves to whichever rung happens to be closest — sometimes not close at all. 27k contracts of open interest on Aug 28 is workable around the money and thin in the wings — width costs more here than the ladder suggests. 32 strikes on that expiry — 50% of the board — carry prints that agree with their own implied volatility and hold up across the ladder, and those are the strikes priced here. Liquid around the money; the wings can be wide, and legging a four-sided structure here costs real money.

Skew is inverted: the 25-delta CALL implies 1.5% more vol than the put. That is the market pricing upside risk above downside risk — a squeeze, a takeover rumour, or a crowded short. Selling calls into an inverted skew pays better than usual and is riskier than usual for exactly the same reason. The term structure is flat inside 1.5% between the two captured expiries, so there is no calendar edge to harvest and no event visibly priced into one month over the other.

At 36% ATM implied vol, the Aug 28 options are pricing a one-standard-deviation move of $7.03 over 27 days — roughly −9.8% to +9.8%, or $64.68 to $78.74. The structure above sells the part of that distribution the market thinks it will not reach. Whether that is a good trade is entirely a question of whether 9.8% is too much or too little for NFLX over 27 days — the delta table cannot answer that, and neither can we.

What actually goes wrong here, as opposed to in general: Holding any short-vol structure through the print because the delta looked safe. The implied move on this name is routinely exceeded.

Picking the strike on NFLX

Put delta is the shorthand for assignment odds: a 0.30-delta put is roughly a 30% chance of being assigned at expiry. On NFLX at $71.71, here is what the bands buy you:

Managing the position

  • Take profits at 50%. Half the credit in well under half the days-to-expiry is the standard exit, and it beats holding to zero on a risk-adjusted basis because the last $0.73 per share carries the most gamma.
  • Roll down and out for a credit if the stock breaks your strike and you still want the exposure. Roll for a debit and you're just averaging into a losing thesis.
  • Decide the exit before the fill. A short-premium position with no stated profit target and no stated loss point is not a trade, it is a subscription to whatever the market decides.
  • Book the loss in the same units you booked the credit. A trade that collected $120 and closed for $340 lost $220; describing it as 'a roll' does not change the cash.

Common mistakes

Counting the credit as return on the credit

$145 on $6,900 of secured cash is 2.1%, not a big number. Always divide by the capital the trade actually locks up.

Selling through earnings without meaning to

A 27-day put on NFLX may straddle quarterly earnings — the only date that reliably matters. If the credit looks unusually rich, that is why — check the calendar before assuming you found an edge.

Selling premium because the credit is large

Credits are large when the market thinks the move might be. Rich premium is a forecast, not a discount, and the two are only distinguishable after the fact.

NFLX cash-secured put FAQ

How much cash do I need to sell a NFLX put?

Fully securing the Aug 28 $69 put takes $6,900 per contract — the strike times 100. Brokers will let you sell it on far less margin; that changes the risk, not the obligation.

Is selling puts on NFLX safer than buying the shares?

Slightly, and only below the strike. You give up all upside above $69 in exchange for 5.8% of downside cushion. Whether that trade is good depends entirely on whether 36% implied vol is expensive relative to what NFLX actually does.

How much is NFLX expected to move by Aug 28?

The Aug 28 options imply a one-standard-deviation move of $7.03 — about 9.8% of the NFLX share price — over the 27 days to expiry. That is the market's estimate, not a forecast: roughly a third of the time the actual move is larger.

How wide are NFLX option strikes?

About $1 apart near the money on the Aug 28 expiry — 1.39% of the share price per rung. That sets how precisely you can place a short strike, and how granular a spread's width can be.
